I have a 1987 Vlokswagon Scracco sohc. Im redoing the head and need to clean it up really well. I also needs to clean the cams and contact surfaces for the head and block. What would be a good degreaser to use that isnt pricy and where would I find it?

Oven cleaner IF your head is not aluminium, oven cleaner will destroy aluminium. Break cleaner is good, although a bit more expensive, and it will work on aluminium. Rinse either with hot water(hot water will dry quicker than cold, and not leave as much residue)

The cheapest way to do this.........get a metal container (plastic will melt) big enough to fit the heads in and go to any parts store and buy chemtool b9 (not b12) by the gallon. It's $10 a gallon. Soak the heads in that.....and then wipe it all off. It's way stronger than degreaser as it is used to clean carburetors. Do not put anything rubber in it as it will swell up like a balloon.

Use liquid dish soap. On metal surfaces such as cams etc be sure and re-oil with a light film to prevent rust.

Take your parts to an engine machine shop and have them pressure wash everything. You may be able to get it free if your having them do any work like head resurface or pressure checking, etc.

diesel fuel makes a great cleaner, and is fairly cheap considering it doesnt have a high flash point,

I also go to those dollar stores and buy the oven cleaners for a buck,, they work great but the fumes will kill ya
