I would like to read a book that is a good representation of Kurt Vonnegut's writing (preferably fiction). Can anyone recommend? What do you think is his best novel? Thanks!

I've only read Cat's Cradle and the Sirens of Titan and they're both great books, but I really love the Sirens of Titan. My favorite book actually (though for full disclosure, I don't read a whole lot). It's just an amazing ride, great, compelling story. It's not terribly long and once you get into it the book is a real page turner.

Slaughterhouse 5 or Cat's Cradle are good starters.

The Sirens of Titan is my favorite, but maybe not representative.

He is an excellent writer! Here's 2 different types of what makes him great:

Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction

Breakfast of Champions.

as a side note:

Vonnegut's mother committed suicide while he was in his early twenties. He himself attempted suicide in 1985 and later wrote about this in several essays.

"Happy Birthday Wanda June," it's a short play that mixes tragedy and humor like all of Vonnegut's other workers.

I'd start with Slaughterhouse 5 - I think it's his best and it is probably his most famous work.
