I had to take my Dell computer in for repairs a while back. They said the fan burned out and burned out the power supply. I had to buy a new power supply (3Y147 Power Supply,160W,Power Factor Correction, Serial ATA Liteon). They had to wipe out everything and reinstall all the software. I brought it home and the speakers don't work. The connections have been checked and they're connected properly and I've already checked that the speakers themselves work. I don't want to pay to have it fixed again and would like to try to fix it myself. So, what is causing my computer to not have sound and what do I need to do to fix it?

I am the original owner. I gave all the disks to the guys who fixed it. Why wouldn't they have installed it? Of course, they did seem not quite sure of what to install. They're asking me like I'm supposed to know.....

So, if the speaker cables aren't connected to the motherboard, it seems to me, only a kindergartner when it comes to this sort of thing, mind you, that nothing is going to work until those are re-connected....

If the drivers dont work, your sound card is fried, so replace it.

be sure the cables are plugged in the CORRECT locations. There should be three ports. one for the incoming mic, one for the outgoing speakers and one for incoming sound input (not mic).
Be sure the sound is not muted, When you download drivers from DELL sometimes they have more than one available for your system. You may need to load more than one driver. Is the card built onto the main board? If not the driver may not be at the dell web site and you might have to do some Internet searching (driverguide.com) after pulling the card and finding the manufacturer.
If the people that worked on your system are professionals I would take it back and tell them they aren't quite through with it yet. Bring your receipt.
