1.Get a roommate. 2. For food, try not to eat out and avoid grocery shopping at the typical markets and check out either Trader Joes ( seriously like way cheaper) or the 4th Street Food Co-Op. Or get a bagel somewhere for like 2.00, I am always amazed at how cheap those are. 3.Even taking the subway can add up, so walk whenever possible. I walk almost everywhere, even a 20-30 blocks walk should only take 15 minutes or so. 4.For clothes, there are so many awesome discount places like Century 21 and thrift/ vintage stores like Beacons Closet where you can get really great stuff for dirt cheap. I work in the fashion industry and but all of my clothes from thrift stores, Forever 21 and Payless, and no one knows the difference. 5.For utilties, just use common sense and try to conserve energy. Also Ive found that unplugging appliances when not in use saves a lot on electricity. Also, depending on how much money you make, you can apply for reduced bills from ConEd. 6. Buy all of your household neccesssities from the many abundant dollar stores in Manhattan, will save you a ton. 7. Switch to a lower minute monthly cell plan and then make most of your calls at home using Skype or Vonage or just abuse your office phone like I do! Good luck.

I suggest you not move to Cali, because nothing here is inexspecive dammit! LOL. Believe the places that are inexpessive are not places you'd want to live or they will become expensive very quick. Cali is developing all over and many of the newly devoloped areas start off pretty reasonable but if you don't move in that area with the first few years, forget it....because the value of the area will sky rocket up in prices as people began to settle in the area.

Believe it or not, it is possible to find affordable housing in both NY and LA. Decide what kinds of weather you want to deal with and do the research on the one you're interested in.

I'm not sure what you mean by inexpensive, but you can find loads of options in NYC or the suburbs for $650 and up in great neighborhoods for a decent sized one bedroom. Don't forget to factor in utility costs, car insurance and transportation.

Good luck in your search.
