I have to go with Eric Dickerson from 1983 to 1988. Ridiculous. He was a durable workhorse with power, vision and consistency and absolute blazing speed. Tomlinson is more elusive and a more complete back, but Dickerson was faster. Averaged more yards per year from 1983-88 than Tomlinson's highest one-season total.

First I would like to say anyone that says Jim Brown is overrated has never watched him play. Jim Brown is the greatest RB of all time, no not only RB but the greatest ATHLETE of all time. Who else is in two sport's hall of fames as players? He played football, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, and ran track in high school. The only RB to average over 100 yards per game in a career. He was voted to the Pro Bowl every year of his career. He only played for 9 years, until he was 30 years old. Ladainian Tomlinson has played for 6 years and hasn't had the effect Jim Brown had. Eric Dickerson played for 10 years and only had about 900 more yards than Brown. In 1963 Brown averaged 6.4 yards a carry with 1862 yards in 1964 he had 1446 yards and in 1965 he had 1544 yards. Also in the first four years of his career there were only 12 games and in the final five there were 14.

Best rushing span ever was Barry sanders from '94 to '97. He had something like 1800, 1500,1500,2000 yards, those years were insane. Dickerson was a great runningback, but durable? Come on, he was always getting injured, his career was cut short from injuries. He had crazy speed and was consistant for the first few years of his career but you can't compare him to a guy like Tomlinson. L.T. can only really be compared to Payton. Dickerson never really had a high per carry average anyway, he just got fed the ball alot.

Tough to say, but i think LT because hes just been other worldly, Also, Dickerson would be a close second, followed by Earl Campbell.

Agree with the choice of Eric Dickerson. For the period cited, there was no one who compares.

Im sick and tired of hearing about Jim Brown...the guy is overrated he is not nearly the top RB of all time.

Anyways...the best 3-5 year period I have ever seen is what LT is doing right now. I wasnt around during the ED times, I did however see Emmitt (my favorite team) and Sanders but I have never seen ANYONE play like LT has.

Earl Campbell. Best running back in the league as a rookie, for 4 years he was the MAN.

Either Gale Sayers or Earl Campbell in their primes. Neither had the tremedously long career, but dominated in their era.

One could also say the same about OJ.
