Ok, I am trying to fix my sister's laptop. It is a Pavilion ZE45xx (I can't remember the last two numbers, but the entire 4000 line looks almost identical. The battery died a few years ago, and it was causing the mouse and keyboard to freeze every few seconds, so I removed it and disposed of it, and that fixed the problem.
However, now the laptop will not even power on. When the AC adapter gets plugged in, the battery led (an amber color) blinks slowly, but there is no battery so I don't know how. It will not boot.
Things I did already:
1. Reseated RAM, only put one chip in, and then the other, and then neither. No indication of life.
2. Pressed the reset button while unplugged, plugged and with various states of RAM in or out. Nothing. (Even held for minutes)

I've tried just about everything I know. The only thing I haven't checked is the CMOS battery, but in order to get to it, you have to dismantle the whole thing. Found a HP service manual for it.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Its a ZE4145, but still the same problem, is it battery charging circuitry thats gone or the motherboard? Still haven't checked the CMOS battery, I've been too busy playing FFXII, lol

I would guess it's the external power block = I know the LED blinking suggest it is 'on', but it may not be delivering enough power.

NB. A lot of laptops don't like to run at all without a battery - check on Google for Newsgroup / owners site for your specific make/model & see what others have experienced.

No damage as long as the charger is plugged in. Replace the battery.
