The Pope said granting legal recognition to unwed couples was a threat to traditional marriage, which required a higher level of commitment.

But he saved his strongest words for those who suggest gay couples should be put on the same level as a husband and wife.

Below is a cut and paste of the Pope's remarks - For those of you who will insist on a source -look it up for yourself .

Canada and other nations are moving tword legal gay marriages - 20 30 years ago the converstion could never have taken place . Should it be taking place now ? Is the Pope right to speak out against homosexuality ? Should he champion the morality of man or should he shut up ?
"This tacitly accredits those dismal theories that strip all relevance from the masculinity and femininity of the human being as though it were a purely biological issue," the Pope said

First and foremost, I don't trust this pope. There's a saying that goes something like "First impressions will either make or break a deal". Well pope benedict XVI/ratzinger breaks the deal. He was former pope john paul II's sidekick for a long time and has already expressed his negative views about homosexuals long long ago... so it's no surprise that he doesn't approve of homosexuals, let alone the civil unions of gay couples etc. The pope is one of the main reasons homosexual catholics are committing suicide because they believe every word the vatican preaches, they hear it from the priest in church, and these "church laws" are practiced in their own family and they can't find a way to express their sexuality due to fear of total rejection by their own family members and society. What is the use of saying a million novenas and praying a billion rosaries when the church doesn't recognize homosexuals are humans, society's equal, God's creation, God's children?? "His Hollowness" should be ashamed of himself because he is indirectly causing the suffering of millions of closeted gays around the world!!!

Legal marriage and religious marriage are two different concepts that are often confused, IMO. In the USA and many other countries where there is a principle of the seperation of church and state the state should not use the guidence of the church when determining what laws it should make regarding family construction. It should make those decisions based on what kinds of unions will lead to stable and productive family units. If same-sex or multiple spouse unions can be regulated such that they contribute to the well-being of the country then they should be allowed.

Religious marriage rules ought to be anything the followers of a religion want, so long as the activities involved do not violate applicable laws (such as grossly underage partners, and perhaps including behaviours likely to spread disease (example, prohibition of condoms in conjunction with frequent multiple partners)).

While the legal system should not be bound by religions opinions, there should be some agreement between the laws of the land and the major religions, drasticly differing systems can lead to widespread confusion and discontent.

In a country where there is no principle of seperation of church and state (Iran for example) then obviously the primary religious leaders will define the laws.

In this specific case the Pope is, by definition, correct as far as the Catholic Church is concerned. This does not mean that he or his followers should have the power to force others to abide by their beliefs, regardless of if they are the voting majority. "Direct democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner". Governing is about doing what is right, not what is popular.

Catholicism and homosexuality don't work together because Catholicism is an institution built by man to prop up their flavor of God. Besides, it's the refuge of child molesters . . . there's no room for the debate on homosexuality while they're trying to keep the child molesters safe from prosecution.

Gay marriage needs to be treated as a civil marriage issue, not a religious marriage issue. Marriage, in essence, is a legal contract between two consenting adults with the purpose to unite finances in a lifelong partnership. There should be no reason two men or two women (consenting adults) should be disallowed from entering into this contract legally. This isn't about ethics or morals, this is about discrimination under the eyes of the law.

Considering that less than 100 years ago, people with different skin color were disallowed from marrying (California struck down that law first, in the 40s), this is just going to take time.

Religion-wise? There are churches who already perform gay marriages. The soul of this argument is compromise -- don't be Catholic if you're gay. There are churches who will embrace you if you wish to be Christian. The Catholic Church is not one of them.

Speaking as an ex-Catholic, and this is one of the reasons, I feel that the Pope is dead wrong on this issue (amongst others).

The Catholic Church is interested only in preserving their interests and their man-made theologies. They are interested in being the ultimate authority, rather than doing the right thing by humans. Watching the cover-ups of children who have been molested by people in their organization points to this fact.

The Pope has no business telling anyone who should and should not love each other, nor who should or should not make a lifetime commitment to each other.

Preventing the loving of each other, as Jesus taught us to do, is the only abomination to God here.

DOPE Why is it that persons who have not have been given any adventure of the real international save sounding off approximately subjects of which they understand heehaw all? Popes communicate an equivalent volume of rubbish approximately heterosexual existence, birth control being a classic occasion, so we who're gay shouldn't take it for my area. as far through fact the smoke replaced into in touch, consistent with possibility his election replaced into POT success! it quite is the previous tale - the smoke's around, yet there is no person in.

he has the right to say what he will.
gender and sex (as well as sexuality) is a tricky subject. how much is nature and how much is nurture? is gender in and of itself only a concept and not real objective intangible thing?

for people who worry lets remember, it wasn't until the 70s that interracial marraige was legalized and even though there were interracial couples marrying them was never spoken of.
the changing of masculinity and femininity have changed slowly each year and we've seen dramatic changes spike up.

but we've also seen theories and concepts fail and never be thought of in an intellectual setting again.

we just need to deal with the present and worry about the future once we have answers to the question in front of us.
(instead of jumping to conclusions

He is right, but eventually whole christian world would accept homosexuality as normal human tenedency. Christianity had failed to take a strong stance againt any wickedness and ultimately have becomes supporter and source of many dirt.

This coming from a religious figure whose church has covered up for their pedophile priests for how many years. Maybe he should speak out on the tactics of his church for the last hundreds of years.
