Why do you think this has happened?
The number of abortions has steadily increased each year since abortion was made legal in 1973…until 1990. Oddly, there have been slight decreases of abortion each year since 1990. Do you think this has anything to do with the availability of the internet to the masses, where they can go to see the REAL, unwhitewashed facts about abortion? Up until then, just like everything else in our society, mothers in tough situations were basically at the mercy of the mainstream media and abortion “clinics” who were trusted to give unbiased information to women, even though the clinic was VERY financially motivated to make sure that the mother went through with the abortion? Your thoughts?

I forgot to mention that births to unwed mothers have reached an all-time high, so it's not sex ed and birth control availability that have reduced unplanned pregnancies.
And, most women are under the impression that facilities like "Planned Parenthood" are the place to go for advice on what to do in an unplanned pregnancy, falsely believing that they will get thorough, unbiased information about all of their options. This is not the case. PP is interested in the mother choosing abortion because it makes them money. PP does everything it can to close down Crisis Pregnancy Clinics who counsel mothers on ALL of their options.

Sorry for the confusion. The first question should have been;
Why have the number of abortion DEcreased? Typo.

There are now more Crisis Pregnancy Centers than Abortion "clinics" in the U.S. today. Crisis Pregnancy Centers provide free baby clothes, diapers, formula, OTC pregnancy tests. They also help women find resources for adoption, pregnant mother care, government help, parenting classes, and a multitude of other things to help mothers get through pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. Some even have families who will take in pregnant mothers who have nowhere to live.

But doesn't it stand to reason that the more acceptable abortion becomes, the more justified fathers will feel in abandoning their children? After all, why shouldn't fathers say "she could've just aborted 'it' and saved me all this trouble. Why should I not have the 'right to choose' too, just because I'm a male?"

levade0: Your statement is not entirely accurate. Yes, men have the option of leaving, but by law, they must financially support their child, even if "they did not want it". They have NO choice in the matter, and even if they are not caught as deadbeat dads, they do constantly have to run and hide.
Women do, however, have several options when it comes to having to care for their offspring; they can kill the baby; they can have the baby and give it up for adoption; they can take their newborn to any hospital or firestation and drop their baby off and leave forever, no questions asked; or they can keep and care for the child. Quite an array of options, when compared with the options for men.

Pathfinder: Thank you for your thoughts. I believe that you are right. The promotion of condoms and other birth control have sent the message that premarital and teenage sex is ok. Girls and boys are having sex younger and younger now...as early as age 11, and we wonder why this is?
What we choose to allow and disallow in our society sends a clear message to our children. What does free birth control and abortion-on-demand say?

I disagree with you. Abortion has increased, because : 1)the society is investing in immorality, especially the entertainment industry. 2)We do not teach that condom does not prevent pregnancy.3)Many underage immature girls are involved in sex activities and getting pregnant. 4)And Man(mankind) has brushed God aside, insisting on living their life apart from God.

There are many reasons. More BC options being at the very top of the list. Also there is the legality of the Morning After Pill (Plan B). Though not cheap, they are cheaper than abortions and giving birth! And now they are over-the-counter! Call your PP and sometimes they will call your neighborhood pharmacy and have them prescibe it for you over the phone in the name of the Nurse Practioner ladies.
PP provides cheaper medical care and birth control. Personally I feel better about going there than to a regular clinic for my yearly exams since I know that that is ALL THEY DO. They can test you for all STDs and think well of you for taking the responsibility rather than looking at you like a whore as some general doctor might do. On top of that, I don't have insurance so the costs are reasonable at PP. They also tell you how much they are going to charge before they do so. Then they tell you how much you have saved by going to them instead of a clinic too. The last time I went I saved: $175. That's groceries and gas to get back and forth to work for 2 weeks. YAY PLANNED PARENTHOOD!

I think a lot of the decrease has to do with more families getting involved. In the 70's and 80's, less parents were willing to help out their children who got pregnant. Also I would say kids are staying at home longer than they used to. Children use to be on their own at 18 or earlier, now some live at home into their 30's and even 40's. Just more cases of grandparents raising and supporting their adult children and grandchildren.

Your question seems illogical. You ask why the number of abortions have increased, yet in the same question you state that there have been slight decreases in abortions each year since 1990. It would stand to reason then that the number of abortions have decreased over the course of the past 16 years, wouldn't it? I would say the number of abortions has decreased because teens and young adults are getting more and more educated about the importance of protected sex and the consequences of not having protected sex. (Of course, reading some of the questions on Yahoo! answers makes me question that sometimes.)

Are you asking a question or are you ranting against abortions and the people that choose them?
Oh, and to address this:
"I forgot to mention that births to unwed mothers have reached an all-time high, so it's not sex ed and birth control availability that have reduced unplanned pregnancies."
Birth to unwed mothers has risen, but teen pregnancy rates are lowering. The age group that the rise is happening in is women in their mid-twenties. They choose to be unwed and to have the kids.

Abortion is on the decrease due to the increased savvy of the younger generation.
I would like you to examine your viewpoint of the mainstream media aiding abortion because I have never in all my years heard the media condone abortion nor have I ever heard of a person going to the abortion clinic for advice on their unwanted pregnancy.
But back to the decrease, young people today have access to so much more info than previous generations did, some of it DIS information. But the young are a savvy bunch, as i said earlier, and they are also changing times to reflect a need for openness on all issues for their own welfare...and parents and adults recognize this.

i think the unwed mother pregnacies have increased because the mother thinks if she has a baby, the father will feel obligated to stay. Not really; there are a lot of scum bags out there and they don't feel obligated to stay even for their own child. So then the mother definitly doesn't want the responsibility of a baby so she gets rid of it.

Stopping abortion is a great cause. The methods people use to stop them are ineffective though. Standing in front of a doctor's office waving a sign is not enough. We need to find ways to get birth control information to these ladies who are sexually active. We also need to send the guys to sexual education class. Unfortunately, the people who are trying hardest to stop abortion, only teach abstinence. Where are the people who help these pregnant girls put their babies up for adoption? Where are the people who will take care of them during a pregnancy when they can't work? Where are the people providing parenting classes and help tracking down the fathers in order to collect child support?
When pregnancy is not a time of fear and abandonment, more people will carry their babies to term.

You sound like another fanatic who is against educating children on human reproduction. Teens need to have resources available to them in order to obtain contraceptives, that are not available to them elsewhere. Planned Parenthood is there to offer services that most communities should be offering in order to avoid unplanned pregnancies.

Actually, the highest number of abortions (US) was in 1981, and they have been declining since then.
Women are given more birth control options, hence less unwanted pregnancies.
Also, in my opinion (backed up by statistics), one reason is because there are fewer and fewer abortion providers. In 2000, 87% of US counties had no abortion services.
ADD: regarding your assertion that PP encourages clients to get abortions so they'll make more money, you may wish to refer to their annual report, which shows their services. According to the numbers, they make more money on contraceptive and STD services. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/PPFA/report-05.pdf
