I tried doing this with our kids a couple months ago. I found a couple things on the Internet. I think one said to bake it at like 350 degrees for 12 minutes and the other said something like 150 degrees for an hour. Being impatient, I tried the 350 for 12 minutes, which didn't seem to work real well. I'd go with low heat for a long period of time...that seemed to work better.

I think the baking is just to speed up the drying. Play Doh is an "air-dry" type of clay so it doesn't need to be baked to cure it like polymer clay does, for example. Sometimes "sudden" heating or cooling can make air-dry clays crack though, so probably the lowest heat for a longer time would be best... then leave in the oven to cool gradually.

You don't back Play Doh. Have them do their hand, then set it on a plate, and put it somewhere where noone will be able to touch it. After a day or two, the Play Doh will have hardened. Have fun!!! =)
