We haven't had a personal relationship for years and he sent me quite a substantial gift for my infant daughter whom he has never met. I feel obligated to send him a gift. Any ideas??

He seems to be reaching out to you. Whether or not you want to pursue a new relationship with him, you should not feel obligated to reciprocate his generous gift with a gift that means nothing to you. Gifts that are received out of obligation aren't very comfortable to receive. Either send a card thanking him for his kind gift and wishing him well in the new year.

If you would like to send a gift, I'd sent food--a nice basket from Hickory Farms (Amazon has food baskets as well) or flowers.

he is definitely trying to re-establish the relationship with you again , so we have to possibilities here :
1. if you like the idea of re-establishing the relationship then get him some gift that gives him the feeling that you love him so much , a big box of fine chocolate will do the job , at
http://astore.amazon.com/chocolate-20 you can find the finest chocolate I have ever seen.

2. if you are not interested in a new relation with him " I hope this is not your choice " then send him back an ordinary gift , men always like electronics , so have a look at amazon electronics store
http://astore.amazon.com/electron-20 and choose a good gift for him.
