I am charge of our small office while our manager is on vacation. One employee went for her one hour lunch break, and said that she would be a few minutes late because she had an appointment. She said she might be 15min over. I told her no problem.
She left and didn't come back for 2 and a half hours!!! I am not happy at all. Do I tell the manager because I am supposed to be responsible here, or is that tattling? She blamed it on traffic, but that is a little excessive. It was an appointment to look at an apartment.

First question, is the employee exempt or non-exempt? If they are exempt then it doesn't matter, you can't deduct for time missed.
I would let the manager know what happened and leave it at that. Like you said, if it was only 15 minutes, then so be it. But to go over by an hour and a half is too much. She needs to either put in to use an hour and a half of sick or vacation or have the time deducted from her pay if she is non-exempt. (Do they get paid for overtime)

Traffic??? Bull Sh*t. Simply talk with her and let her know that you will dock her pay 1.25 hours and that because she was so late and she didn't even call, that you will have to write her up and let her know that she has been warned. There is no excuse for not calling!! It's not hard to pull over to a gas station and say I am going to be much later than I thought. Totally disrespectful!! Besides, if you let her get away with this behavior when then cat is away, she will do it again and again and then you only have yourself to blame, because you didn't do anything the first time and basically said yes, it's okay to not take your job or me seriously!
Besides, why isn't she taking personal time to look at an apartment. You could dock her personal time, if you don't want to seem too harsh. You would still be letting her know that her behavior and lack of respect has been noticed and will not be tolerated. If you are in a retail enviornment, then it's a dock on pay period. Either way, your manager will see it and will address in their time.
I would be so mad!!

Well it could be a number of reasons, it COULD have been the traffic, it could have been that her appointment came late or ran over. I would just simply approach the manager that she was late but dont seem too mad, because some things do come up and you cant really predict when someone will come back, but warn the person if she needs to take a longer lunch.

ok...don't be a tattle, but don't let her get away with it. traffic is a pretty lame excuse so keep an eye on her breaks for a while and next time she does it, mention it to your manager so he/she knows what's going on and i'm sure they'll take it from there.

If you are in charge you are not tattling. She should not be payed for the extra hour she was gone.
