Well here's the thing....
Chevy Cobalts replaced the Cavalier. The Cavalier is one of the worse vehicles to drive from GM. Right next to Pontiac's Grand Am. So that's saying something.
However.....
I got a great deal on a Cobalt SS with a Supercharger. And I'm pretty impressed with it. Very smooth ride, has some "balls" to it, and the price was very reasonable.
If you can't buy foreign but you want something decent, yeah I'd say go for a Cobalt. But I'm not sure if the Cobalt will eventually be another Cavalier.

Yes, they are good looking and reliable. I am 21, so I wanted something sporty, but not too expensive. I originally wanted an Alero or Grand Am GT, but as soon as I saw my cobalt, it was over, I wanted it. It was Sunburst Orange, but not many options, power locks, thats it. I got into a car accident in January with it, and it held up great, but I did total it. So, I got a car i didn't really want, but I was pinched because I needed a car to go to work and college with. So, being unhappy with the car I had, I started looking for another cobalt...and found my new Cobalt Level 2 LS...it is hot, bright red, 2 doors, sunroof, rims, leather, chromed exhaust tip, fog lights, pioneer sound system...the works! It was love a first sight for me. Once again, I wanted something sporty and this car did it...it had everything I wanted and more! The sport packages cost a little more, but its worth it. Hope you find one you like, if you choose to get one. They are good on gas and insurance!

They are way better than the Cavalier they replaced. The majority of the reviews are positive, with no consistent problems. The Ford Focus is the most recalled vehicle in history, and still lives up to its name. the Toyota Corolla ranked 5/6 in Car and Drivers small sedan test (Cobalt was not included, and the Volkswagen Rabbit won). Toyota also had the most recalls last year, and Ford had more than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined.

If you get the Cobalt SS you'll have a lot of fun it since it has a 205-hp supercharged 2.0 liter I4 engine, 18" painted aluminum wheels, leather seats, iPod jack, performance handling suspension and tires, and a Pioneer 7 speaker sound system. The starting price for a new one is $21,540 but if you get a used one you'll probably end up paying $15,000-$17,000, if not less. Good luck.

i personally have never been in a cobalt. but i like the cars very much. Chevy has put out a good car for a good price. i think that you should get one even if it is just a base model.
