Electric heat is very efficient, very close to 100% in fact. The halogen heater is creating light as well. This portion of the energy is lost as heat and is wasted unless you need light. Other than the light energy which may not be needed, the heater will not cost more to operate than any other electric heater. You pay electricity by kWH, regardless of consumption or type of load.

A kilowatt heater is the same to run no matter what system it uses to heat. But,and don't take this the wrong way, from your avatar I'd guess your female and I've observed that females tend to favour a direct heat source.Convection heat sources are more dispersed. The halogen is more direct.Basically what I'm saying is the convector will heat the room, but the halogen you can warm your hands,or anything else at it,it's more like a real fire,it feels warmer.you can sit right up to it till you burn. You cant really do that with a convection heater.Plus, draughts don't affect halogens, they do to convection's.

I have a 1200w one, and I was having a new electric meter fitted so I asked the very nice gentleman how much and he said that on full it would use aprox 14p per hour and you know he was right! He also said that the storage heaters were about 50 - 60p per day. But not to forget that once you turn a halogen heater off everything goes cold but the storage heaters put out all day, and the storage ones are more effective I must admit.

I would say the halogen are by far the cheaper to run, those brick filled ones are very expensive, I have halogen and oil filled heaters and both are brilliant.

UK electricity is about 10-12p per kwh so your heater is that much for every hour it's on full, if it has three bars, each will cost a third of that per hour.
Dave A--- If you are paying that much you are being overcharged a lot!! Are you on a card meter, or a landlords meter?? There is a legal limit as to what one can charge to 're-sell' electricity. Contact the CAB for advice.

I bought an 800w one yesterday and it has cost quite a bit (about £1.80 for approx 6 hours) to run - 30p/hour.
jayktee96: we are on a key meter but i forgot that this was the total electricity used in the house for lighting (1 room), fridgefreezer etc so the actual cost of the heater will have been lower cos i'm stupid and didn't take this into account!
Thanks.

best buy is a calor gas heater. although more expensive to buy you pay as you go so to speak buy buying gas canisters for it. they also heat your house properly unlike the halogens which only heat you if you sit in front of them. on saying that the halogen will be cheaper to run than brick heaters which take an age to heat up
