Does anyone know the meaning? used in a lyrical context (which is where I get this question from) The band Tool uses that phrase in a song called "reflection"

"before I pine away....
Before we pine away"

What does it mean exactally if anything?

To "pine" is to kind of mournfully miss and long for someone or something. "Pining away" is kind of more dramatic way to say the same thing. I could say "I'm pining for my elementary school days" (which, by the way, I certainly am not!) or I could say, "I'm pining away.....".

Maybe the difference is pining is something you could kind of "do in the background of your mind" while "pining away" is something that's less in the background of your mind.

Like if my diet is not sufficient for whatever reason, I could pine away.
Ever seen a pine tree, they last about as long as a man lives, then they pine away. They basically eat themselves. So they pine away.
