lucky for you, you don't need to purchase any additional batteries - it's like a cell phone, even comes with it's own AC adapter/charger

i would advise only charging the battery when you get the red light that means the battery is two thirds the way done - or when not used for extended periods of time

Here is some information on that topic:

How long does the rechargeable battery last before it needs to be charged again?

Battery life largely depends upon the game being played, but it can last about 10 hours, which is comparable to the Game Boy Advance SP.

Fun Fact: The Nintendo DS's power light will change from green to red when the battery life is around 30%.
#

How long does it take to charge the battery?

The battery requires four hours of charging. You will know when it is fully charged when the amber charging light shuts off. It is okay to continue to play the Nintendo DS while it is charging, though the unit will take longer to charge.
#

Will I ever need to replace the rechargeable battery?

The battery will last for several years (or about 500 charges) before battery life starts dropping. If you experience problems with your battery, please try our power/battery troubleshooting.
#

#

How do I dispose of the battery?

For information on battery disposal contact your local solid waste authority. Things to keep in mind when disposing of batteries:

* Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery
* Do not dispose of batteries in a fire

# Does the battery have to be totally depleted before I can charge it?

We recommend charging the battery pack completely before its first use, or after you have not used it for a long time (the battery should be recharged at least once every six months). It takes about four hours--with the unit turned off--to fully charge the battery.

Other than these two instances, you can recharge the battery pack at any time. The Nintendo DS's power light will change from green to red when the battery life is around 30%.

Note: The unit should not be left uncharged for long periods of time. Leaving it uncharged for long periods (months) may shorten the battery life. As with all batteries, the charge will slowly dissipate if not re-charged, even if it's not turned on.
#

What type of battery is it?

The Nintendo DS uses a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.
#

Can I play my Nintendo DS while I'm recharging the battery?

Yes, it is possible to play your Nintendo DS while the battery is recharging; however, this will cause the charging process to take longer than the typical four hours when the system is not being played at the same time.

The Nintendo DS comes with its own special battery... it doesn't run on AA or any store-bought batteries. If your battery has died and it won't charge, I would go to a place that sells games and find out if they sell DS batteries. Or, if it's pretty new still, I would contact Nintendo and see if they have some sort of warranty on it or something.

It has a built in battery with a charger that just plugs into the side. You don't need to buy separate batteries, unless the ones that are built in fail (which I believe is rare)
