The three hundred and fifty billion dollars we have already spent on this war in Iraq and the other one hundred billion the President is asking to spend next year. Very ironic we can't spend that money on Americans but we can spend it to kill people in another country. Sick.

I am convinced that government agencies, courts, and financial institutions have policies and/or make mistakes the make a substantial contribution to homeless; and if they would be held accountable for their mistakes in individual's lives/accounts it would be a step in the right direction.
They should put let emphasis on this business of "educating" people and more emphasis on figuring out which of their policies contribute to the destruction of lives and what they can do about making sure that if their customer service people make mistakes those mistakes will be corrected. In other words, "The System" needs to look within rather than outward if it wants to figure out one of (possibly) the major causes of homelessness.
"The System" has come to see itself as all-knowing, all-invincible, all-perfect, and all-powerful; while it has lost all respect for the general competence and general decency of most people.
While I know there are some cases of homelessness in which the individual has done something to create his own problems, I suspect a good part of the time that is not the case. As long as people in "The System" keep looking to try to figure out what's wrong with the individual they are not going to find the answer to solving the problem of homelessness, because they are looking in the wrong place.

We can't end homelessness. Only those who are homeless can take the steps to make their lives better. Don't tell me they can't do it...look at all the illegal mexicans living here. They came to the country with nothing and they have jobs and places to live.
A Democrat gives a hungry man fish to eat.
A Republican gives a hungry man a fishing pole.
Democrats will put in place more programs to put people into homes that the taxpayers pay for. Problem is, the people never quit sticking out their hand for more.
Republicans will help people by giving them the resources to help themselves, then step aside and let people control their own destiny.
So the answer: Homeless people having the desire to make a better life.

I know that in the U.S. there aren't as many homeless as in some 3rd world countries such as Africa, but I'd say that it would take a major effort from celebrities. Personally, I admire celebrities who give to charities and help the homeless, but if they aren't, that's really just wrong and selfish to keep the money for one's self when they have an overabundance of it and most average people can't do anything about it. I hope that in the future more celebrities will give money to noble causes. It might be a good idea to write to some celebrities, encouraging them to give money to help the homelessness.

there isn't much that can be done. Most homeless people are homeless due to mental illness or addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. In the 80s the democrats said it was unfair to keep the mentally ill in mental hospitals, so they were all released to fend for themselves. The dems felt it was a violation of their civil rights to force them to stay in a hospital. Most of the rest who aren't mentally ill, are alcoholics or drug addicts. Again, the government doesn't have the right to round people up just because they are addicted to a substance.
Some people are homeless by choice. There are people who choose to live the life of a hobo.
Bottom line is that to end homelessness, laws would need to be changed that allow the institutionalization of people who are sick, but aren't really bothering anyone besides themselves.

The ridiculous sum of money spent on the controversial war in Iraq, would have made a serious dent in the homelessness, if it were spent responsibly in the United States for housing and proper healthcare.

People are homeless mainly because of their own fault. This is the case for most, and off course there are always exceptions. So it would be difficult to end homelessness around the world.

An end to mental illness. I have a friend whose son is homeless, by choice since his mother and sister beg him to come live with them, but he's mentally ill and likes living on the streets.

More people need to get out there and help those less fortunate. You cannot always 'teach a man to fish' and if that is the case, you must still feed and house them.
The Lord said that whatever we do to the poorest among us, we do to Him. If we do not take care of those less fortunate, God will punish us.
