The origin of Santa Claus is actually Christian based. St. Nicholas was following what Jesus says to do in the bible. After his parents were killed he used his inheritance to give to the poor.
So in reality Christmas has to do with both.

Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. When I look at the word Christmas it reminds me of "Christ" and "mas" (the Spanish word for "more"). So to me Christmas means more of Christ! I want to have more of Christ in my life and in my celebration of Christmas. I also appreciate the idea of Santa, which came from a man named St. Nicholas who gave gifts to some poor girls in their stockings that were hanging to dry on their fireplace mantel. Santa is a representation of generosity and love to those around us. God's gift of Jesus was the greatest example of generosity and love in all of history. So the two really go hand in hand, but the real meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus over 2000 years ago!

Even though Jesus was not born exactly on December 25, the point is to celebrate His birth. There is no more significant figure in all of history, and there is no other way to salvation besides through Him.

In reality it has more to do with Santa than Jesus. Christmas is a hijacked pagan festival and Jesus was not even born in December. In fact Jesus himself never celebrated his birthday.

Most traditions of Christmas (santa, xmas trees etc.) have roots in pagan traditions. We merged them all together when we became Christian. In cold countries we always had a winter festival even when in pagan days.
