Is it ok to use nail varnish remover on carpets to get rid of nail polish?

Nail polish remover is acetone, and carpets are generally synthetic fibres, so I doubt it will hurt it. What will most likely happen is the polish itself (the varnish part of the polish, so to speak) will dissolve but the pigment in the polish, which is very intense, will remain (especially red). You can try a slower solvent like methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or toluene or xylene, all available from Home Depot. Acetone is a very volative (i.e., quickly evaporating) solvent so it has a short work time. Toluene is much longer, but not as strong. All of these solvents will make you high as a kite and nauseous so use a LOT of circulating air, NO SMOKING OR FLAMES anywhere nearby (including pilot lights), and open the windows.

First of all try this on an old carpet, or a hidden part of the carpet first. It may be successful.
It's certainly worth a go.
