I've never been there, so I don't know the best area to stay in. Not something too too expensive. Also, what are some good things to do there?

Still the St. Francis and Mark Hopkins ... both on Union Square.

If you want to be in the center of things stay near Union Square. Public transporation is easy there, lots of places to eat and shop.

The Day's Inn on Lombard [not in the center of the city] may be cheap but as a rule hotel rooms in San Francisco are expensive. If you can find rooms for under $75 a night you will be lucky. Before you book any budget hotel make sure to check reviews on trip advisior.

The Clif and the W are very expensive hotels you will not find a room under $200 a night there. Go there for a drink but don't stay there!

Some less expensive hotels that are clean and in union square
Maxwell Hotel
Hotel Bijou
Chanclor Hotel
Galleria Park Hotel
Andrews Hotel
Hotel Mark Twain
Rex Hotel

And the person who reccommended expedia is right, that site and hotels.com can help you find a good deal on hotel rooms. They may however be not the best room in the hotel, as hotels quite often give the less desirable rooms to those guest who book through 3rd party websites.

You can try da hotels near Union Square.. like Mark Hopkins, tho I'm not sure the prices of such hotels or which are da cheaper ones.

As for what to do there, walk downtown Market St. for shopping (there's the new Westfield mall that just opened few months ago), go to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 specifically, drive to the Golden Gate bridge, some of the museums are nice like the MOMA or Asian Art Museum or Legion of Honor depending on what's exhibiting. You could also tour Sausalito, which is on da other side of the Golden Gate bridge. Then there's the view from Coit Tower, dining in North Beach (little Italy town), Union Square shopping, JapanTown (gotta try one of their crepe shops there), Chinatown, Lombard Street (also known for the "crooked road"), visit Ghiradelli Square (chocolates), try one of the City Tour Guide walking tours, take the ferry to Alcatraz, Angel Island, Ocean Beach (long stretch, good for bon fires tho really cold 'n windy at times), Golden Gate Park (great for picnics and walks) -- stroll by the Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, Stoe (dunno da spelling?) Lake... all in Golden Gate Park. And then there's also Castro Street, if you wanna say you been there.. San Francisco's gay neighborhood. I know some ppl, even tho they're not gay still wanna go just to see how it is.

That's some of da stuff you could do... I only know coz I've been up here for school for the past 4 and a half years.. hehe and I still haven't done some of the things I mentioned.
SF is a nice city.. cold and foggy, easy to get around by MUNI (bus) unlike L.A. (if you been to LA before). Make sure you bring a sweater/jacket with u when you're outside the hotel coz ya never know how cold it can get in no time (it might be hot one minute and very cold da next!).

Have fun and enjoy da city! :)

On Lombard street, a hotel called " Days Inn" it is such a good little hotel and the price is the best, I think it is $50 bucks a day. For Frisco that is sooo good. I love San Francisco. I hope you have a wonderful time while there. Be careful you may just end up staying for good!! Good luck!

Stay at the W hotel in SOMA or the Clift hotel. The Clift has a really cool bar for people that are visiting the city and is centrally located.
To do here? Many things! Alcatraz, Golden gate bridge, go to wine country (napa, sonoma, russian river), venture into Marin county by the ocean. Amazing views! Have fun.

Try on Hotels.com. There are a lot of hotels near where u want to site-see. Pier 39 is always a fun place to check out. They have shops, restaurants, aquarium, and other cool things...www.pier39.com. 1 of the restaurants that I really enjoys is Joe's Crab Shack down the street from Pier 39. Anyways I hope that you have a wonderful time while you are there.

Have breakfast at Squat and Gobble (locations and impressions below). Take the ferry to Sausalito, some amazing city views from there.
