I am a big fan of Ann Rice's early stuff but not necessarily her vampire series -- once Lestat became a rock star, I lost interest.
BUT, I recently read "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova, which takes the myth of Vlad the Impaler, who the story of Dracula is supposedly based upon, and tells an AWESOME, page-turning story!! 100% recommend this book!!

Even better than the Anne Rice books are the triology called Diaries of the Family Dracul by Jeanne Kalogridis. You won't be sorry if you read those...very well done.
Oh and I agree with the poster above that Sunshine was a really good read!

Don't know about Anne Rice but, if you haven't tried Fred Saberhagen's books you missing something. Dracula is still the rotten S.O.B. he always was, but in these books he is the good guy. The first book in the series is entitled " An Old Friend of the Family ".

Piercing the Darkness by Kathrine Ramsland. It is a documentary on vampirism in America. She also wrote the autobiography of Anne Rice.

You should read "The Dracula Tapes" by: Fred Saverhagen if you liked Dracula. You can also read the series "The Vampire Files" by: P.N Elrod. There are 10 and the first one is called "Bloodlist". I hope this helps and enjoy!

I highly recommend "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson. I just got done teaching a college class about vampires, and of the 3 books we read (Dracula, Queen of the Damned, and this one), my students almost unanimously liked this one best of all.
