Around the end of the nineteenth century, wooden sailing ships and steel-hulled steamships were in competition for business on the high seas. Sailing ships were at a disadvantage because they were smaller and slower than the steamships, and the routes they could follow were dependent on the wind. But steamships also had a disadvantage: they had to carry coal to produce the steam, and this took up space that could otherwise have been used for carrying cargo. In addition, they had to make stops along the way at coaling stations to replenish their bunkers. In time, steam engines would be powered by oil instead of coal, andlater, steam engins would be repaced by powerful diesel engines, this brought an end to the sailing ship and made it possible for major shipping companies to build huge luxury liners, such as the 305-metre long Normandie, which could carry 2000 passengers and travel at over 50 Kilometeres an hour.

However, just as stell steamships had earlier replaced wooden sailing ships, in a few dacades jumbo jets wuold bring an end to luxury liners carrying a wide range of passengers from point A to point B. Today, the main business of these vessels is taking wealthier tourists on exotic cruises.

Just before the 20th century, there was heavy competition between the smaller, wooden, sailing ships and the faster, steel-hulled steamships to control the shipping industry.
While the routes of sailing ships were severely limited by the winds, the amount of cargo that steamships could carry was limited by its need to store coal or oil for fuel and its need to make frequent stops to replenish its supply.
Eventually, steamships would become huge, diesel-powered, luxury liners for passenger transport, but would eventually be phased out by the efficiency of air travel, forcing them to roam the high seas as cruise ships for wealthy tourists.

Around the end of the nineteenth century, wooden sailing ships and steel-hulled steamships were in competition for business on the high seas.
Sailing ships were at a disadvantage because they were smaller and slower than the steamships, and the routes they could follow were dependent on the wind, but steamships also had a disadvantage: they had to carry coal to produce the steam, meaning they carried less cargo and additionally had stop along the way at coaling stations to replenish their bunkers.
In time, powerful diesel engines and jumbo jets replaced both types of ships for shipping means, leaving major shipping companies to build huge luxury liners, such as the 305-metre long Normandie, which could carry 2000 passengers on exotic cruises.

In the nineteenth century, sailing ships and steamships competed for business on the high seas. Sailing ships were dependent upon the wind and steamships had to carry coal, so when the diesel powered engine came in to the twentieth century it took over the water ways for shipping and carrying passengers.
The 305 meter long Normandie, a huge luxury liner, can carry 2000 passengers and travel at over 50 kilometers an hour.

You should be able to do this yourself. Break it into sentences and capture the key nouns and verbs (and maybe an adjective or two), breaking some sentences in half and keeping in mind that some sentences refer to nouns in previous sentences:
1) 19th century, sailing ships, steamships, competition
2) sailing ships, disadvantage, smaller, slower, depend on, wind
3) steamships, disadvantage, coal, took up, space
4) steamships, stops, to replenish, bunkers
5) time, engines, oil, diesel, end, sailing ship
6) possible, build, huge liners
You've now chopped the 150+ words down to 35 key ones. Pick what you see as the most important. For three sentences, I'd go with sailing/steam 19th century competition; both had disadvantages; diesel replaced steam.

The end of the nineteenth century brought near extinction to the wooden sailing ship, replaced by faster steel-hulled steamships. The transition was hastened by the evolution from coal to oil to diesel fuel and more powerful engines, which allowed for increased size, cargo capacity, and speed.

1. At the end of the nineteenth century, smaller, slower, wind-dependent sailing ships were in competition with the short-spaced steamships, which had to make regular stops to replace fuel. 2.The sailing ship era came to an end when steam ships switched to oil and diesel, making it possible to travel at 50 kilometres an hour with up to 2000 passengers. 3.Now, with the popularity of air travel, ships are mostly used for cruises and for taking wealthy people to exotic locations. (I have numbered each sentence to show you there is just 3 - hope it helps - double check i put all the important info in before you use it ok?)

For no more than three sentences, try the following:
Find the three main points of the paragraph.
Assign each point to a sentence, then write the sentence.
If the paragraph seems to have more than three main points, try using a semicolon in a sentence to add another point to it - but be careful, it's easy to misuse a semicolon.
Hope that helps.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
