It was Judy Garland (born as Francis Gumm) that played Dorothy in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. In the very first production of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Anna Laughlin played Dorothy alongside the comedic team of Montgomery and Stone on Broadway in 1902. Judy was not the first choice to play Dorothy in the movie; Louis B. Mayer of MGM called her "the fat kid." But the role ended up launching Judy's career and long-time star status at MGM.
