i do not have my restore disk for windows xp

if you mean they've gone from taskbar then go to control panel-sound and audio devices and look for the box that says show volume in taskbar

goto control panel-> sound and audio device -> check out "place volume icon in taskbar"

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307918
or... go to C:\Windows\servicePackFiles\i386,
open i386file check to see if Sndrec32 is on file, if not go to search on WebBrowser sndrec32.exe you will be directed to many sites, choose the one you need and copy it to your i386 file which ever way it is set up to be added to your files. follow the instructions and you will be on your way to sound once again

Go to start>all programs>accessories>entertainment>

and if its not there restore your system to an earlier point by
start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore

I think it should work then.
