The Salvation Army is a Protestant denomination which derived from the Methodist Church, founded in the mid nineteenth century by a remarkable social activist named William Booth and his wife Catherine Booth in London, England.
Sadly, the SA is probably the most homophobic organization in the world. The leaders of the SA went as far as the White House to influence policies which would allow them to receive federal funds, but while continuing to discriminate against gays.
The obsessively hateful activities of the SA toward gays and their families is difficult to reconcile with the massive amount of caring and charitable work the SA does worldwide. No one can fault the commitment of the soldiers and officers and employees of this church/group, who minister real help to underprivileged people.
But the tremendous charity of the SA does not reverse the enormous damage they have inflicted on their gay members, families, and on gay employees. And their right-wing political activity, paid for with donations, is despicable.
They have a history of internal 'witch hunts' and God help the gay or lesbian child unfortunate enough to be born into an SA family. They will receive only hatred and rejection and condemnation until they leave the Army, which is the usual outcome.
I personally know numerous children of SA Officers who became drug addicts, alcoholics, derelicts, suicide victims, and other sad ends, and I cannot help but wonder if some of these kids wouldn't be alive today if their narrow-minded SA Officer parents hadn't been so cruel 'in the name of God'.
The Boy Scouts is not related to the SA, but has a similar policy, where they want to receive tax payer money, but they don't want to accept tax payers as members, if they happen to be atheists or gays.
But most major cities in the U.S. have dumped the BSA chapters who refused to honor non-discrimination laws, and told them that they need to find private funding for a religious scouting group.
This is almost as sad as the SA tragedy, since the BSA has touched the lives of many boys, including myself and my brothers.
Too bad I could never be 'me' in either the SA nor in the BSA.
But as General Wiliam Booth once said, 'Every good movement should die with it's founder.' The SA has conveniently buried their founder's wise remark.

I believe the Salvation Army is a Christian Church, therefore, they should uphold Christian morals. (Romans 1:18-32). I understand that having a gay brain is both learned and physiological. BUT, so is being an alcoholic or a serial killer. If I was an active alcoholic should this church still allow me to work for them? I am programmed to be attracted to women. Does this mean I should be allowed to pursue sexual encounters with as many women as I want, and still be allowed to work for this church? I don t think so! Just because your brain is inclined to think a certain way doesn t make it an okay behavior in the eyes of God. And, just because society has deemed it okay doesn t mean it is okay. The root religion our society has adopted is called, Egoism, which is an ethical theory that treats self-interest as the foundation of morality. People setting the moral guidelines as opposed to God is why this world is getting worse! You have to understand that any church has to draw the line on what is acceptable, according to Christian teaching. That line is set by Biblical Scripture, not the Salvation Army or any other church! Therefore, any disagreement is a disagreement with the word of God, not the church. You can t just pick and choose which scripture you like and disregard the rest expecting God to say it s okay. Does this mean Christians should hate homosexuals? No! We love them and encourage them to find strength in Jesus. If you find yourself engaging in an act that is contrary to Gods teaching, then it s best you start making attempts to stop. Living a life without God will result in an eternity without Him as well.
