I used to have that same problem! what you do is set aside time to study in a room with no T.V,then after about an hour you can watch some t.v!

watching TV is somewhat a passive act. you don't have to use much of a brain power; while studying requires active learning (thinking, learning new material and trying to remember it). So, it make sense that our brain favors the easier activity out of these two.
If you really want to learn the material not just because you have to (for example it is assigned by teacher) but rather you are interested in it, then studying becomes easier. For example, in math, you want to know how to solve problems not because you are asked to do so by teacher but you are just curious; in history, you want to know what happened in the past and how did it has been shaping our future; in science, you want to know why everything thing is happening in the world the way it is etc. Study because you want to rather than you have to. Try to figure out why are you learning what you are learning, and it will help you develop interest in studying.
Make a schedule (assigned some time for TV as a break from studying not the other way around) and follow it. Be strict about it.

TV is addicting because it is designed to grab your attention for the advertisers. The rapidly changing pictures and flashing lights will sidetrack your mind from across the room. The only thing to do is TURN IT OFF. If you like to study with background noise, put on a cd of instrumental music...with no words to sing along with and distact you.
If you are trying to watch your favorite show while doing your homework, make a deal with your parents. You study with the TV off first and they buy you Tivo so you can watch your show when your work is all done.

The Idiot Box is addicting like you stated. Try moving yourself into another room so that you can't see the darn thing. Get your studies completed first then take some down time and veg out in front of the TV. Just don't veg out in front of this mesmorizing box before starting your studies or they may not get completed at all. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Get into your room...put on the headphones and play something that you like (but not like the most)...it works like this, at first it will distract the uncontrolable part of mind from the surroundings...it back fires if the tunes are your most favorite ones. This method worked with me...I still have this habit....And the most effective but toughest method is, cancel the cable connectivity of the TV....good luck with your studies

Good question. T.V. and Internet are highly addictive things. but if your exams are not very near you can use these for not more than 2 hours.
in case exams are very near just remove the power cord of T.V.,hope this will help. Good luck to you.

Take the T.V. out of your room. If you can't do that, go to a library to study and don't bring your cellphone, ipod, friends, etc. In the end it is your respondsibility to fight off temptations and study.

First you need to make a decision to study.
Then you write down, on a piece of paper, why you need to study, what the ultimate outcome of your studying is for (A on the exam, course, whatever), and how long you're going to study every day (every week day, every MWF, whatever).
Pin the paper somewhere you will see it every day, preferably on your TV or something. Stick to your goals. Out of people who achieve their goals, 90% of them write them down.
Personally, I find it easier to stay at school and study there.

Look at it this way - Do you want to just watch other people doing things or be the one doing things? People on TV have very little time to watch TV as they are the ones creating the reality, not just watching others.
