You prove the point when one states " most people in HR departments used to work for the IRS" Sadly in today's economy there are either lots of jobs nobody can afford to have or lots of jobless people vying for the few jobs that pay a living wage. I had to laugh at the comment making this Bush's fault, as horrible as he has been, it was actyually the WTO and NAFTA agreements that Slick Willy made, that have caused this mess. Welcome to global economy 101 American students, you better pay attention ! I wish you luck Daniel and hope you find a good job soon, I'm sure you will be fine.

Money-They want someone who wont leave and that they can customize to their needs. I was out of work this year for 6 months and started dropping some of my qualifications on my resume in order to get a job. Sad but true, I got more calls. What does that say about us as a nation? Don't think outside the box, don't be well rounded and versatile? Just be the replaceable puppet that will do more work for less and compromise your work versus life ratio?
I actually found that when you let the employer know that you are interviewing them, because you want to make sure it is the right fit for you, they are more engaging in the interview. Additionally, I just reached the point where I wasn't going to hide who I am really am. I became blatantly honest and didn't sugar coat anything. (gamble...yes..but employers liked it) Also, if you submit a cover letter, make sure it is your own and not a template. It may take you several hours and drafts to create the perfect one. Most of my first phone calls from potential employers were because of cover letter. I didn't use a template and I thought about the job from the hiring manager perspective. I sold myself and personality and made sure to invite them to call me to discover more.
Experience!!! You can have a degree in Basket Weaving 101 and still get a job. The degree doesn't really matter. It shows that you made a commitment and you stuck with it. Therefore, you can ask for a little more money. However, if you don't have the experience, be prepared to settle for entry level. I would much rather hire someone with experience than someone who only had book knowledge and no applicable skills.
Good luck..don't get too discouraged. It's hard I know. I got to the point where I was questioning my career choices, leaving the financial industry to pursue my dreams, and still even now, I've settled for a position, which isn't in my field of choice, but I can gain valuable experience and use it in my second business.

Simple Supply and Demand, Just do a search for Walmart & Jobs and you will find many cases where when a new Walmart opens thousands of people apply for a few hundred jobs. Back in 1999 even Mickey D's was starting 16 year olds out at $9 an hour now even the retired can't get a job there unless they are willing to work for $7.25. The massive illegal immigration problem just makes it worse, all you can hope for is that out of the 200 resumes you send out you get enough practice interviews and out of those interviews you get an offer. And don't even think about not accepting it because you will not have another offer until you send out another 200 resumes. That was my experience and the more I read it is the same for so many others.

Having a college educatin doesn't mean that you instantly get a job when done with school. The companies are picky because they can be. Maybe they just didn't like the way you presented yourself, who knows...move on to the next one!

Hey, don't worry yourself. I moved to Michigan in Feb. of this year and still can't find a job. Had several interveiws that i thought went well, and no one called me back. It's frustrating, but hang in there your young yet and you probably don't have a house payment and 50,000 worth of debt to worry about either.

It's a buyer's market, so they can wait. You, and nine other people, need a job, so they can wait.
