Fog may be able to get thicker when there is less heat from sunlight evaporating the clouds of fog but mostly I think the answer would be it looks thicker at night when there is less visibility.

because there is no daylight penetrating through it !
I have just got to go ourt in it now, and it is dark and the fog is dense. ( and freezing )
this morning the fog was thick and bothersome, But at least i could see the kerbside .
I am just home again, glad to be safe indoors.

becuase tha tis when the best cooling at the surface occurs. Also, it depends on the wind speed also whether or not fog can develop. Wind dries up and scowers out the moisture at the surface.

It is thicker because it is colder and more warm moist air condenses making thicker fog.

The air temperature near the ground differs from the temperature at higher levels. The higher the difference the more moisture in the air.
