This is the worst our country has been divided in recent years...so unless you are accusing Bush of being a socialist, then no, I don't think so. But I do believe that a controlled population is easier to handle, and a nation divided against itself can't stand. So control of the people might be a more appropriate objective, given the current administration. IMO

I think it is the residual from the Cold war years.
A quick Cold War 101 Remember Kerchief setting on a John Deer Tractor in Iowa. He shook his fist at the camera and said, "we will bury you without firring a shot."
Russia had (admittedly) over 10,000 agents working in America. One of the primary goals was the age old, Divide and Conquer. They set out to create racial divides ethnic division religious and political divisions. The goal was to destroy the unity we gained fighting together in WWII.
Sure there are always exceptions ie someone called private smith a WASP in 1950. But in toto America was strong industrial and the World power.
The Wall came down and the cold war froze to death circa 1990. But the divisions created after 40 years of Red agents working on us did not come down with the Berlin Wall.
Some divisions are healing others are still suffering a rift. Until Americans mends these tears in the fabric of society we will be a small people with small goals.

Thats pushing things a bit .
I do however feel it is in the best interest of the government and those who benefit by working for it to keep America divided not only by political parties but religion as well in order to maintain its continued expansion . 160 or so million working Americans and fully 35 million get a pay check from Uncle Sam . Another group is pensioned Government workers of which we have over 40 million . 30 million are on welfare . And the cost to real working Americans is staggering to think about .We have 30 million Illegals collecting some kind of benefit .Thats nearly 2 thirds of all Americans supported by the work of just 80million people . We want to keep those 80 million people at odds with one another .
And so far it has been working .
Problem is we are losing those jobs overseas now and no one is replacing them .
I see huge problems paying off the thieves who work for Uncle Sam in pension benefits with out lowering the standard of living and getting national health care .

Of course not!
Ethan I expect smarter questions from you than that.
Between the US and Canada,Europe,Japan, and Australia, the majority of the world is "Blue".
The "Red" is the Southern mentality that thinks the North is making fun of them for being Southern and is easily deceived by politicians talkin' big about gawd, and that Dem=gay. And talk radio run by a bunch of hypocrites who dont care about their listeners.
This embarrasing prediciment is starting to wear off, however.
