Other than taking away a privilege ie: cell phone, computer, etc there are not many effective ways. The goal should not be to punish but help them learn from their mistakes as they are young adults showing them respect no matter what goes a long way. Humans make mistakes and that never stops with age, it's a part of being human. Also avoid confrontations when either party is angry. Communication is key with young adults, it has to be two way and listen more than talk.

I never punish my teenagers--- I just talk with them and try to help them make good choices. I know that sounds really idealistic--- but it actually works. When they were little, I never hit them, but if neeeded, sent them to the corner or their rooms to think about things. As they grew in understanding, plenty of open communication worked just fine.
My kids feel able to tell me just about anything, because I try not to judge them. I truly like them as people as well as loving them as my kids--
I wouldn't punish my friend for doing something I didn't like... I would just talk with them about it and try to help them understand why that thing could be hurtful to themselves or others.
I believe kids should be respected... then they are much more likely to return the respect to the parents.

Parents are still punishing teenagers? coulda fooled me..... But I would say take away thier cell phones, computer, games, cars,
then they will get the point..... Unless they just use thier friends until your punishment is up.... There is no real way to do this unless you lock them in thier rooms.. which you can't.... because they will find away to do what you told them not too..... So another one would be not allow them to be with friends.....

Well, that very much depends on what they have done in the first place isn't it?.. Silent treatment always work, ON me.. =) Try it for urself, when he does something wrong, just ignore him, stop talking to him, until he shows signs that he's sorry.. :p Serious, try it! Psychology strategies are always better, children who gets caning tends to be more rebellious.. And each time they get worse.. Love them, that's the best of all.. =)

Punishment should suit the action. Depends what they've done.

If they like to go outside and play then don't let them go out.

If they like to socialize then don't let them get online, talk on the phone, or invite friends over.

If they to PaRtY then don't let them anywhere!

Anyway, I know all of the answers here follow the same thing so I know this didn't really say anything new.
