The practice of an employer forcing an employee to have direct deposit as the only means of getting paid seem like an invasion of privacy by requesting information (bank Acc #) the employer is not entitled too. The employer still issues paper check to outside vendors but has used the fear of damage from storms as the reason why. We are located in Florida.

Yes it is legal. A company can make rules about how, and when they pay you as long as it is with legal tendor. They can change it from weekly to monthly if they felt like it (as long as the pay didn't change). They also have a choice on how to pay you, (paycheck, Direct Deposit, or even paperless)

Ultimately, my guess is that they couldn't force you to do it if someone took the time to fight them on this issue. If I was your employer and I had changed my system to a more cost effective direct deposit system, then I would expect everyone to go along with it. Anyone that couldn't figure out a way to make it work for them would probably be looked on less favorably. If they would buck the system on something so simple as this, what other attitude problems do they have?

If you consider this a problem, why don't you ask the employer to help you open a bank account that has no fee and is only for the purpose of receiving your paycheck. You can then move your paycheck into another account that the employer doesn't have to know about.

well...i guess it must be legal seeing as more than one company does it. i used to work for a credit union and they made us open an account with them for forced direct deposit. this is a good point, though. kind of like how you have to pass out other personal info. to an employer.....

If you are in the military you are required to have direct deposit. Most employers offer it as an option, but it is not illegal to require it.
