yes, they're called self esteem boosters. because people who have to constantly get told they're pretty usually don't have much else going for them except their looks. so they want to remind people that they are prettier than others.

Very few people have a true self-image. Many people have a poor self-image, believing they do not amount to much. This colours the way they see themselves in the mirror - as ugly even if they are attractive. Others see themselves as God's gift, even when they are the only ones to do so, out of an over-endowed sense of self-worth.

While people look at others based on the outward appearance, we look at ourselves based on the inward appearance. This image is usually formed by opinions given to us and self-esteem levels rather than anything physical.

Cut them some slack, unless they are constantly fishing for compliments.

yes some do, but i want to talk about those that don't. they have a problem similar to the anorexic. what they see in the mirror is not what you or i see. we see beautiful. but they are so damaged with respect to their self image they only see ugly the same way an anorexic still sees only fat.
be careful before you judge them because they show no other outward delusion.

Yes! people with low self esteem often "fish" for compliments by insulting themselves in front of others. It's caused primarily by low self esteem but immature girls often do it as well when they are younger.

NO!! it's called modesty. The ones to blame here are the people that tell them over and over that they are handsome or pretty.

I don't think so. I think it is because if they don't say so, people will attack them out of jealousy. If they don't make as little of the situation as possible, they put themselves in danger.

Another ploy is to play dumb. Just ignore the situation, and if someone says anything, just look astonished, and say, "Gee whiz!!! Me?? Really! You think so? Golly!"

some people do this, i think. not just with their looks, either. it's a complex with some people. some people really do have a low self image, though.
