I've put in almost every game I own and nothing works. My comp doesn't even know that something is in it. I've restarted it, I've gone to Explore from the Start menu and looked under the D: drive (still, it shows nothing), and I've even gone on Task manager and tried to see if any unusual tasks were running. It's not hooked up to the internet, so it doesn't have a virus. And when I put a CD in, I can hear it spinning and everything. But a few seconds later it stops and nothing happens. I really don't want to have to take it in to fix it, because that would be a pain and I don't have that much money. Any ideas on how to fix it?

the reading lense is out of alignment. replace it with a new drive. They are cheap to buy, easy to install and you will probably get a faster one than you have now. Go for a DVD and get the ablility to read both movies and CDs.

The first thing i would check are the drivers. If you have windows xp go to my computer right click on the drive of your cd rom and click properties. click the hardware tab, here will be a list of drives in your computer, you need to find the correct drive you are looking for, under the tab "type" it should say dvd/cd, or cd rom. once you are sure that this is the drive in question, highlight it then click the properties button. A new window will pop up, under the general tab check to see if anything is not right, as far as it should say "this device is working properly", and at the bottom it should say that the device is enabled. there is a trouble shooting guide there you can go through that will help you reinstall your drivers, which is what i recommend before spending any money. drivers become corrupt for many differant reasons and need reinstalled to make that piece of hardware work again. i usually just uninstall the drivers/device, reboot and windows sees it as a new piece of hardware and will reinstall it for me. xp is great for this, but any older versions of windows do take more effort to reinstall sometimes. so unless you are sure of what you are doing, you should ask a friend that has some experience with computers to do it for you.

Cleaning the CD drive is worth a shot before you write the drive off as being toast.

You should be able to use a plain ol' cleaning CD. Most of them work just fine on audio CD players, DVDs, **and** computer CD drives. Read the fine print to make sure. But it's worth a try to spend ten bucks and give the cleaning kit a whirl, because a new drive will cost more than that.

If there's no difference after cleaning the drive, **then** it's time to get a new one.
