My computer has been making a loud humming noise, I checked all the fans, and made sure there were no cds spinning, But it definetly sounds like it is coming from the Heat sink. I was wondering if i can disconnect the heat sink and start up the computer to see for sure if this is the problem.

for about 3-5 seconds only. The proc gets hot FAST!!! excess heat will damage it and then you won't have to worry about the heat sink anymore. The problem is probably a bearing going out on the cooling fan on the heatsink. They are cheap to reaplace but very, very expensive to replace if left to the last minute.

Heat sinks don't make noise...the fans above them do. If you remove the hint sink and start your pc up you will bake your cpu in just a few seconds... don't do that. take a can of compressed air and spray the heck out of everything....fans, Hard drives, EVERYWHERE. if it's a fan making the noise, replace the fan, but do not remove the heat sink. In back of the heatsink is thermal paste and if you take it off you'll have to reapply and it can be a pain in the booty if you don't know how to do it. I knew a dude that applied too much and fried his processor. Another guy pressed too hard and broke his motherboard. My advise is to do the compressed air thing and if it's still making noise, replace the fan. if it is still making noise, take it in to have it looked at. Replacing a heat sink is not for the amature. Good Luck

Put on the new thermal glue, and make sure the heatsink or fan is a 478 slot fan, since almost all P4's are 478 slot. A 775 slot heatsink will only work with Core 2 Duo, Quad Core, and Pentium Duo Core. Have a nice day Ken.

If your CPU has a fan, it can be loud. Unless your heatsink has come seriously loose and you are shaking up the computer while you're working, it would not be the cause of your problem.
Do NOT remove the heatsink and start up your computer.
This sounds like a passive heatsink - leave it alone.
Check out any one of the fans in the machine: in the front of the case, in the back, side and even check out the power supply fan.

You could, nut I wouldn't recommend that. The heat sinks removes excess heat from the processor chip as well as other components on the computer boards. Check to see if you have a loose cooling fan or even loose heat sink before removing them.
