Once when I was just looking around, I saw a check box to cause that prefix to go away, but now that I need it I can't find it again. :-)
Thank you
Shawn

3 methods:
1. Create a shortcut, rename it to remove "Shortcut to" prefix, delete it. Do this 5 times. (Works for XP too)
2. Use Tweakui :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Explorer section > Uncheck "Prefix "Shortcut to" on nwe shortcuts"
3. Edit the registry.

Don't download anything and don't try to mess with your registry - you can really mess things up. Just right click on the icon and select "rename". You can call it whatever you want. You could rename "Shortcut to Internet Explorer" to something like "Surf da Web!"

How To Remove Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts
There is a prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts present on desktop icons. If one wants to remove this prefix, he or she can easily do that. To do this you have to download and install Tweak UI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
After the installation, open Tweak UI, highlight "Explorer" and uncheck the box against -Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts. Click OK/Apply.

Use the Tweak UI Power Toy. Change the setting under the Explorer tab.

Do you mean that tiny arrow? I used "tweakui" to get rid of mine - it's free and I got it off the microsoft website.
