I came across an old spare hard drive, so i hooked it up on my computer to see how much storage capacity it had. It had a lousy 500 mb. So i reinstalled my original one that had alot of my media files (approx 200), but now i can only find about 27 of them??? I did a search for all media files, but no luck. Is there anything i can do to get them back? How?

Djenkens had a good answer but I would also add that picking up an external case for your drive is a good idea. You can add (hotswap) the unit to your current system and never have to open the computer case.
Isn't hind sight wonderful.

The next time you decide to change out drives just to check them, "DON'T!!!! in the process of changing out your original drive, it could have been shocked, yes shocked. when ever you undock a drive be sure to wear a wrist strap to keep electric static at bay, reason is that you could short out your drive by damaging clusters if you're not grounded. the drive is a magnetic wheel that has very very small houses as I call them that store data, if done improperly, you can find yourself without a drive, "period"! Try This,
Scan Disk= For errors. - Then defrag= Sort files.
Open my document= check status of all media files you have on board, Open new folder, type new name for folder, drag and drop each media file into that single folder. rebuild your media from that folder only, and if you lose any files you will know it. One more thing, when checking another drive, leave your 1st drive at bay, use a duel (eide) strap, place master and slave in there correct places being sure to set the second drive jumper as slave, hook back up, reboot, open bios settings window, make sure the drives are shown as primary & secondary, start windows, now you will be able to see all files from both drives, once my computer is opened, single or double click drive letter or just move mouse over drive letter and it will state how much space is on your drive. most files you can get back only if you have the money or software to do it. better yet you may be able to restore to an earlier time, try that as well. if all fails, smack yourself for the lose!

if you did a search on the entire computer ( hard drives, or any external drives) then yes it is gone. Unless you back up all your files on a external hard drive like zip, flash or even CD. it happened to me and we lost everything we had and I am locked out of some of my disk because the newer system doesn't supports the password protection.
