I've heard it was either spring or early autumn. For sure it couldn't have been winter because even Israel gets cold at night during the winter season. So the shepherds wouldn't be outside tending their flocks by night like the Christmas songs say they would if it was winter. Tending sheep would be a probability in the warmer, dry months.

The problem is there is nothing to tell you when he was born. We're not even sure of the year. We know it wasn't 0 AD because we are aware of an error in the calculations made in the Dark Ages. It's all suspiciously vague.

According to QI last night, muslims believe he was born in the summer. Ultimately though, pick a date out of a hat and you'll have a 1/365th chance of it being right!

December 25th was a pagan festival celebrating the days becoming longer. Belived that Jesus was born feb or March or October since that is when they have traced the Big Bang too.
