I will assume this and let you go from there: I assume she gave you an extra tree she had, and that you know her well enough.

If so, you could easily take her out to a restaurant she likes and, if she gets herself a tree every year, then get her a very nice Christmas ornament (maybe engraved at a store like Things Rememebred) and present it to her as a gift.

If you don't know where she likes to eat, then you could get her a Visa check card or some AMEX gift certificates and give them to her with an orament.

IF she no longer gets a tree becaue it's too big, too much work, etc etc,, then get her a gift card and for the next few years, locate a florist and buy her a miniature tree. She can either plant it or toss it in January.

A donation means that nothing is expected in return.

But, I have to agree that etiquette would suggest something in return.

First of all, take into account how these people behave and act. Are they the kind that would love a homemade cake or pie, or maybe even a knitted hat and scarf? I know a lot of people who would cherish that much more than something store bought. Or, better still, invite these people over for a nice dinner. It doesn't have to be on Christmas day, as I know everyone has their own schedule, but make it known to them that it's your gift to them, or just your way of saying Thank You and sharing the joy that the tree brings you and your family. Remember, it's not about how much money you spend, or what you get, it's about sharing the holiday and company amoung friends. And it does sound like you have found yourself a friend.

If you insist on going store bought, then a gift card to their favorite restaurant or store would be ideal.

Another simple way to show thanks is sharing holiday baking. A lot of women enjoy that and just having the company. You can always invite her over to help you "sample" and bake treats.

can you invite them to spend christmas eve or christmas day with you. Sometimes it's not about money, or what you can spend. Show your sincere appreciation by inviting them to share it with you. A small token, such as a gift card for something would be very nice along with the invite.

You can get a nice bottle of wine, 2 wine glasses (usually about $2 each at any target store), and put it in a basket you decorate with ribbon and tissue paper.

You can do the same with Coffee or tea. Get them 2 nice mugs, a little bag of coffee/tea cookies and a couple of bags of nice flavored coffee, tea or hot cocoa.

it's artificial.. be politically correct.. it's not fake anything it's real plastic.

why not take them to dinner... ?

or invite them to dinner? service with a smile is one of the better gifts in life to give.. and recieve.

honestly it is...

:D

$140 can make a fine meal for those who give generously.
