Who is the better overall back, in their primes? Take into account all facets of game, including blocking and receiving, as well as the different eras in which they played - not to mention that payton was on a pathetic team most of his career...

id i've to say payton.
cause people feared payton. i remeber once haring a interview from a saftey from patriot who played against payton. the es-player kept on saying how every game he'd tell himself that he would not let payton stiff arm him. but that everytime he got stiff armed and how he put so much force behind them, that his neck use to hurt walking back to the sidelines

the man could military press 500+

Time will ultimately decide this for us, but as for right now it is clearly Payton all the way.

He was so good that he was all the New England Patriots game planned for in SBXX, remember how that turned out? 46 - 10

LT may have more natural talent, but he doesn't have one tenth of the heart Payton had.

He has all these stats. He has earned them, but you can't compare this era to Paytons era.

LT is a great talent. He is the best back in the league today. He may one day be the best of all time, but six seasons is too soon to say he is. If it only took 6 seasons we'd be talking about Gale Sayers, and alot of other backs (Bo Jackson etc)

Payton Vs Tomlinson
The heart is the difference.

Walter Payton

You do know that Payton was on the '85 Bears team right? They're considered the greatest football team of all time. L.T. was actually the one on a pathetic team most of his career.

Anyway, here's the breakdown:

Rushing ability- even

Blocking- close, but I'd give a slight edge to Payton at this point because he was so good for so long.

Recieving- L.T., no doubt about it, Payton never came close in this aspect.

Passing - L.T. 7 of 10 for 6 td's, 0 int's on his career. Payton 11 of 34 for 8 td's, 6 ints. No brainer, L.T. is the better passer.

Overall: Even though the statistics are greatly in favor of L.T., I still give it to Payton because he played for so long at such a high level. But L.T. has more talent, and he should surpass Payton eventually.

Ladainian Tomlinson Stiff Arm

That is a tough one. They both have different styles of play. LT can do pretty much anything....run, catch, throw block. But Payton was a big guy, he could burst through defenders. And its true Payton wasnt on such an elite team like LT is.
I think LT is amazing!! But Payton is legendary!! With time LT could become the best......but for now you gotta look at history and say Payton

I have to say Tomlinson, mainly because of his all-around capability. Walter Payton didn't throw a touchdown pass anytime that I can recall.

Walter Payton was the best running back ever. He is the standard by which everyone else is measured. On totally crappy football teams, he won a lot of games. He could run and cut, catch the ball, and knock defenders on their asss. I hated him as a Packer fan, but he was the best. End of discussion.
