In my personal opinion, I would get a digital camera. =)
Merry Christmas!

I would get a digital camera because it's smaller and some can take mini videos. Also it's more fun to set up photo albums then watch hardly EVER watched videos from a camcorder. Plus when you have a photo album you can always look in there when your bored and remember all the special moments that your family or you and your family spent!

I just bought Nikon Coolpix L-3 from The Camera Box (315 Rutledge Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211, Tel. 718-387-0069--you will be instructed how to order through their website).
It costs $119.95 plus $9.75 shipping (Ground). It is a digital and movie camera. You just switch the selector button.
A 2-gigabyte SD card will give you one hour of TV movie (more hours depending on your settings). A 1-gigabyte SD card will give you hundreds at least 300 pictures, depending on your settings.
You will like this camera that you might want to keep one for yourself.
It is 5.1 mega pixel therefore enlarging your pictures to 8.5 in x 11 in. would not be a problem if you use the highest setting (resolution).
I am not advertising this product. I am just a consumer.
Check it out.

Digital camera should be first option.
Camcorder is better but making cassette or CD/DVD is more cumbersome. Also to make a video you would always feel the necessity of STILL pictures.
Therefore buy Digital camera first and later on Camcorder.

I believe the the digital camera will be used more often and there are many more ways to use it. Not only can you take photos to be printed, but e-mailing items and taking pictures for ebay, etc might come in handy. I have both, but don't use the camcorder nearly as much as the digital camera.

Get the Nikon Coolpix. It's a digital camera AND a camcorder. They work so well and withstand a lot. For instance, my boyfriends brother dropped mine on cement, it rolled into the river, and it still works as well as it did the day I got it over a year ago!! =)
