Do a Control alt and delete and go to the processes tab. Sort that list by the CCPU usage and find out what file(s) are taking up the CPU. Research that file and fix the program that is causing it. In most cases that I have seen, it is either Virus Scan software running, or a backup system running. Sounds like you did good troubleshooting with the other items you mentions. (also if this is a laptop, make sure the power supply, ie battery, is charge properly.)

well with ad aware... it will be slow... if you're also using spysweep there'll be times your machine will be hijacked by the program...
especially when you open mail and the browser.
did you scan for infections? do you have AVAST! ? avast will find the crap that norton and those other programs can't... and it'll speed that machine right up... also shutting down ad aware and other spy programs when you're not using them will help.
sorry those programs are invasive just as bad as the spyware they claim to disinfect from your machine.
check your registry.. do you have "hijack"? use this to scope the registry and it'll tell you in plain english what's in the registry and you can delete garbage from it without having to search for numbers endlessly.
don't defrag a disk too often... that's not good for it.. and it won't help in performance unless you have bad sectors.
try these things....
if they don't work......
time to ghost the drives and clean them off and start out fresh.. not all programs are going to find infections.. since (what they don't tell you is ) most of the things that slow down the machine aren't considered infectious.
i have so much trouble with antispywares now.. i just shut them down until i feel i need them.. as in scans and whatnot.
the machine is going to get infected anyways.... but i don't need it slowed down so much so and stopped by an antispyware program that fails to perform optimally.

sounds like you did the basics already with disk clean and defrag. Ad-aware is good and spybot is ok. Try going to www.trendmicro.com
It has a free online spyware removal that beats the H*ll out of bot ad-aware and spybot and also has a great on line antivirus.

Either clear out more space by deleting all the junk you don't really need, such as pics or music files that you don't use very often, or you could buy more memory for your computer. Adding more ram will always speed up your computer, if nothing else works.

2 or 3 issues would desire to do this. a million. Older laptop. 2. Virus and secret agent ware 3. Very small digital memory brought about by having too small a swap document. 4. Older drivers loaded for some issues. 5. Foreground/historic past settings on your abode windows. the incorrect putting makes it complicated or no longer possible for abode windows to be very effective.
