Your IP address isn't really a private thing.

Now, with that said, if your computer is not secure, then can hack you knowing the address. The only difference here is they know before hand who they are attacking.

The whole "I know your IP address" is a joke interms of being a threat. If IP addresses were that big a deal, companies would change them on a regular basis instead of keeping them for years.

Yes, that is possible. You should guard yourself with a Firewall (free firewall at zone labs) Also, you should get a router or something like that. That provides further protection as well. Other then that, unless you are specifically targeted, you are probably safe. Make sure that if you enter and account information to sites, that the little yellow lock and key are shown in your browser. This indicates that the site is encrypted and secure. Good luck.

Getting your IP address is equivalent to someone knowing where you live. They have your address and can get to your house, but if you have good security on your home (an alarm system, locks, cameras, etc..) no one's going to rob you. However, if a criminal is good enough and determined enough, he can eventually get into your computer.

So just getting your IP isn't enough, they'd have to get passed whatever security measures you have and that's not easy if you have a firewall, anti-virus, and good passwords.

Hope that helps.

Only if they know what they are doing and you don't have a firewall or other security software on your computer. Buth there are other ways to get into you computer and personal information. You have to be vigilant.
