even though she is premature, she should be able to nurse. If she can nurse effectively, then stop pumping and just nurse all the time. Pumping will not help your milk supply get any larger, the baby will stimulate that on her own. 20 minutes is not very long either. My girls nursed for an hour at a time. Try just nursing. It may take longer, but is more effective, and will solve all your concernes. good luck and congrats.

How many weeks premature is she? When you breastfeed it is much more work for a baby than to bottle feed. So maybe she is used to the bottle but you can fix that problem you just have to keep working with her and be patient. If you can rent a hospital grade electric double breast pump, such as the Medela Symphony it works great! And I find feels most like the baby. You can get a prescription from your Ob/Gyn. Or go to a drug store and rent one. It is about $50 a month. That is what I did. If you get this kind of pump and pump if your baby is not nursing your milk should not decrease. I worked full time and pumped for 1 year and my milk never went down. If all else fails and you have to pump and give her a bottle that is just as fine because at least she is getting that precious breastmilk! Good Luck and Congratulations!

When she nurses from the breast, is her latch good? Can she latch on, suck, swallow...or does she fight you and pull off? Or does she fall asleep right away? the baby is more effective at building up a milk supply than a pump is, but you could go on doing this for months (if thats what you want!) I always advise (I am a postpartum doula) to try the nurse the baby directly, its easier than dragging out the pump, washing and sterilizing and all that stuff....this week try nursing three times a day, then 4 times. If she will nurse, and latch on well, then your supply will not be in danger, and you can pump less often.

If your supply gpes down, use Fenugreek supplement 3 capsules 3 times per day. Keep up waht you are doing, and yous hould be fine. My friends baby was 6 weeks early, and she was very similar to your story. After the first month or so the baby got enough strength to eat at the breast every feedding, and she is still breastfeeding with no problem 8 months later.

You keep on trying! Baby is learning to latch on your breast it takes time and its frustrating for you. I been there and you just keep on pumping and offer it in the bottle. But offer the breast first 15 minutes on ea. breast. Oh! try not to look at a clock it just makes it more frustrating for you. Just rest and relax to let your milk down. Drink plenty of water if you have low milk supply.

Yes, pumping will slowly dimenish your milk supply. Breastfeeding is an art. It's something Mom and baby have to learn together, and every baby is different. My first was a breeze, but my second was difficult. He and I took at least two weeks to get the hang of it. My advice would be to call the maternity ward, where your little one was born. Ask them how to get in touch with a lactation consultant. Most hospitals employ at least one. They're going to be the most knowledgable, and they'll be able to correct any mistakes you might be making.

Good luck, and way to go for giving nursing a shot!

whilst infants are this youthful they do no longer drink *lots* and it quite is frightening now and back through fact once you're breastfeeding you don't understand how lots they are eating. finding on the type of bottle and nipple you're utilising, your daughter might want the smaller nipple. Playtex does have some nipples/bottles that simulate the breast greater (guy, do they seem humorous). this might make it greater handy for her to circulate back and forth - and he or she may even finally end up who prefer the breast. make useful that the 'pass' for the nipples you're utilising is on the very lowest. particular, the substantial element is that she is eating. there are fairly some options obtainable for bottles and nipples if it relatively is the line you elect for to take. you'll be consistant with those you utilize. Going back and forth between diverse manufacturers/sizes/shapes will reason confusion in some infants and could make feeding time very annoying. satisfied pumping!! (positioned money right into a good one in case you intend on having greater childrens)

The pump is not as efficient as a baby who is latched on properly would be.

Do you have problems getting her latched on?

Have you seen a Lactation Consultant or a La Leche League Leader? (A LLL Leader will help for FREE and might be able to visit you at home.)

Or is she falling asleep on the breast?

More details about what is making it difficult would help us give you better answers.
