Are they negative? I don't know. Are they damaging? Yes, they are.
Not all Asian students are good in math. When there is such a stereotype, people compare them against those high standards, and when they don't measure up to those higher standards, it makes them a failure. It causes people to say things such as "for an Aisan, you certainly don't do well...."
Also, remember, if you are seeing "Asians" in the United States, you are only seeing a small number of "Asians." Those who get out of their own countries are usually better educated and have better educated parents, not mention above average wealthy. They certainly don't represent "average" folks back home.

Stereotypes are essentially negative because they are based on a perception of an individual but don't take into account the diversity within that group.

no, such thing even if its a good thing to say. what if u meet an asian that is not good at math. u would look at them and think what the fcuk is wrong with that asian. its not nice to assume things just because of a person's race or gender.

Yes , but they are stereotypes. (1st ?)
2nd ? No, but they are still stereotypes.
The assumption is that stereotyping is negative, because one is not taking people as they come as an individual. One is prejudging or deciding before one really knows.
