The socio-economic deferrence paid to sports (especially in the form of corporate welfare, like publicly funded ballparks and cash incentives for a team to remain in a certain city) is an obscene, but hardly surprising feature of modern capitalism. Professional sports plays a very important role in society as a distraction - it gives people something to concern themselves with while neglecting other, more important issues that directly effect their lives. You know, like the lack of adequate health care, the huge budget deficit, the subsidizing of big business, etc. Take a look at how much time and space is dedicated to sports news. Watch how your local TV stations promote the local team as "OUR Padres" or "OUR Dolphins" or "OUR Lakers." And sports fans dutifully follow the lead, obsessing over the victories of their favorite team, despite the fact that they gain NOTHING from the spectacle, beyond entertainment. Your question could also be applied to celebrities. Why is so much time dedicated to the stars' pregnancies or scrapes with the law? The next time you watch your local news, use a stopwatch and time the stories (or segments). How much time is spent talking about the war and how much time is spent talking about Paris Hilton? If you ask members of the broadcast news media (especially news directors and producers), they will tell you that the public doesn't want a lot of news. The public wants to be entertained. Well, ask yourself - who is served by this approach? Is it you, the consumer of the news ... or is it the advertisers who want you to buy their products and services? Finally, why ARE military men and women paid so little? The sad, but simple truth is, they are expendable pawns in the game. They are numbers. They are not human beings whose welfare we have to be concerned. We might get to see their pictures when they're killed, or when someone is waving a flag. Who is the best known casualty of the war(s)? Pat Tillman, a celebrity football player. And when he was killed by friendly fire, what happened? Did the government apologize to his family? No. They created a story that was a complete myth and the media dutifully reported it.

No, not at all.
They earn every penny by giving up their freedom, anonymity and privacy. Every detail of their lives is published for all to see. That's a high price to pay for a few million a year.
Plus, they have a tremendous work ethic! They do things which most people aren't willing to do so they can have what others won't.
The reality for most of us is to work from the age of 16 to the age of 67. That's 51 years!!!!!
Pro athletes work for ten to twenty years, then retire with enough money to live an awesome life. It's called condensing time frames and they're experts at it.

Hell no they don't. They get what they get because very few people can do what they do at the level they do it. They create a huge money machine for team owners. They deserve every penny. I heard the same thing 30 years ago when most baseball players made well under 100 grand a year. People are jealous, it's as simple as that. I say God bless 'em.

I think you have to look at it in a case to case situation. Some players go out and work their butts off, and play as hard as they can, this is their job. If their employers want to pay them this much then so be it that is their choice. If they are going out and trying their hardest every game and trying to win then they are not making too much and deserve every dime their owner will pay them.
Then there are the players who go out there, and just give up if things go wrong. They will only try if there is a chance to win. There are also people out there who just don't try anyway. They rely on their natural ability, and don't try, but are getting payed anyway. These are the players that are making way too much.

and I pay too much for tickets. It's a case of supply and demand. Since there is no competing product the price of tickets will continue to rise and the salaries of the players will as well. Did you know in the last year athletes salaries increased by 9 percent. Mine only increased by 1%.

oh yeah.
It's ridiculous, they are making millions and millions playing a friggin' game while other people risk their lives each day for a fraction of that.
The value system in this world is all screwed up. Don't even get me started on Hollywood.
Geez!!!
Well, back to my breakass 30K a year job.
Happy Holidays!!!!
