If a rat trap doesn't do the trick? Get the best Rat catcher known to man....A CAT! If you don't want a cat, call a professional that guarantees their work. If you buy rat poison use it with care, especially around children. Then plug any ways (holes) they are coming in with steel wool. Anything else they just chew right through.
MOST IMPORTANT......Clean up any rubble around the building, and keep all garbage tightly covered, and don't leave any food exposed! Food is what draws them. If it's always there for them, they move in and live with you, near their food source.
NO FOOD>>>>>NO RATS! If it is a multi-family building.....EVERYONE HAS TO FOLLOW THE RULES!

Get a humane trap. Catch them, drive them out to the countryside away from your house and release them alive. Find the place where they were coming in to your loft in the first place, block this up to stop the problem in the future and VOILA!!! You have got rid of the rats and you can sleep easy knowing you haven't killed anything.

if it was me i would try and catch them alive , as poisoning them they die and them you could have a stink on your hands . another way is if you know some one that keeps ferrets , they will do the trick . and after the rat have left and they will put a small little bit of the ferrets droppings in each corner and if the rats do come back they will smell it and think the ferret is still there. and by the way if you have any air vents take the cover of for the ferret to get out or put a lead on it. or put a locater on it so you can find it in the cavity the smell of the dropping will keep them away as well

Try using dynamite! BLAMMO!

Just get a rat trap. You can pick them up from any decent hardware store. Rats will go for any food, they're particularly partial to chunky dogfood or liver.

The spike for putting the bait on should be bent into a hook so that it's more difficult for the rat to remove the bait without setting the trap off.

There are "humane" traps available, but if you release the rat into your garden, it'll just find its way back in. You need to take it for a bit of a journey, preferably over water, so it can't find its way back.

Good luck.

rats tend to live in the walls and between the spaces you can't get at. It's really annoying. I find that those plug in things which emits a noise they hate work. You can't hear them yourself but annoys them so much they don't want to live there anymore.

of I would firstly find out how they are getting in. (Usually through the air brick beneath the house) When you have done this lay traps first, and then poison. None of this will be any use unless you block where they are coming preferably with concrete!
