butcher shops had sawdust on the floors in their shops...this is to settle a argument, thanks

Quite clearly. In the 1950' and early 1960's I frequently went to a butcher shop with my parents while they were shopping and distinctly recall the sawdust.

Yeah... back in my home town in Ohio we had a Kosher butcher/general store that used to put sawdust on the floor to absorb spills and water from snow on folks' shoes. At the end of the day the owner would sweep up the dirty sawdust. Some places still use sawdust in winter to keep the floors dry so no one slips on standing water. Messy, but effective.

Yes, my fathers dad was a butcher....they used to play in the sawdust in the back all the time. I have heard all the stories...including the ones on how to cheat the customer with lead in the chicken.

The butchers in our town still spreads in on the floor at the end of every day.

Yes, absolutely. To keep the floor dry from mopping up the dirt and blood that they brought in on their boots (the butchers that is,,,from when they used to keep livestock on the premises for killing.
