I'm looking to get into cyber crime investigations. Specifically against pedophilia. Can somebody help me and guide me towards what I need to do. Do I need to go to the police academy? How do I start?

Recently looked into that and the license you need will be the same as for 'private investigator' or PI. There's not really a difference in terms of handling sensitive information. The rules differ in each country though. Here in Europe they have academies for security work (guards, justice department AND investigators) but also there are home studies for PI (online and offline work, same diploma).

The license might require you to provide some details on business plan and registration or even a plan about how you will store sensitive information on file. It might involve background checks as well, depending on country or state law.

The best way to start in my experience is a good and recent book from someone in the field and same nation you're working in:

- Behind the Private Eye: Surveillance Tales & Techniques
- The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to Private Investigating
- http://www.einvestigator.com/

Good luck!

Edit: I assumed you were not looking for working on a cyber department for police or governmental agencies, but that's an option too but follows more traditional schooling.

that is handled at the Federal level. if you have a four year degree you can apply to be admitted to the FBI academy in Quantico, VA.
