I have a ten-month old son, and my Dr. explained it to me like this. He needs the formula because of the many nutrients he still needs so much of. Look at the label - you'll see just how much formula has to offer in terms of vitamins, iron, etc.

However, you need to start phasing in baby food so that the baby will learn how to eat. Fruits and veggies, of course, but my Dr. said cereal is important because it is fortified with iron, which they need a lot of after 6 months of age.

The Dr. also told us that we should increase the amount of food and decrease the amount of formula very gradually until he is about 1 year old. She recommended eliminating about 2 oz per month. At 10 months, our son is taking about 14 oz formula and more and more food, including table food. (He would have more table food, but he still only has two teeth!!)

Apparently, at about 1 year old babies' nutritional needs change and they start eating less because they are not growing as quickly. But until then, they really need all of the good stuff in formula because they're getting so big so fast!

They are both very necessary for your 8th month old. Give formula mixed with cereal in morning with a fruit, for lunch baby food with 4-6 oz of juice, dinner baby food with water, and use formula 6-8 oz when baby is sleepy and through out the day give water.

I think that both are good for the baby... but formula has plenty of nutrients... that is why it is used the first entire year of life- if not breastfeed- but why can you not do both??? Just give baby food for lunch or dinner and formula for the other two meals...

by 8 months my son was eating about 2 jars of baby food a day.. he loved it.... but all babies are different..

good luck!!!

I often wonder myself. I have a ten month old son.

The only answer I can come up with is eventually they come off of formula and they have to get used to baby foods, solid foods, different tastes, etc.

You have to let there body adjust to the new foods and prepare them for solid foods.

Formula has added vitamins just like we would take a vitamin pill.
The baby foods have the natural vitamins and antioxidents.

So as a mother myself I believe one is as important as the other.

Formula is the most important part of your child's diet until they reach 12 months of age. The babyfood is a good source of vitamins, but some research suggests that you shouldn't even begin to give your child baby food until they reach a year old. Baby food is just extra until then. It gives extra calories and vitamins. But, it isn't even neccessary to give your child these things. It just prepares them for weaning them off the bottle.

When my children were infants it was recommended that they continue to have formula for the whole first year in order to assure that they got the right nutrition. It was said that babies may not eat enough of the right nutrients to be sure they get enough if they don't also have formula.

A baby should be on formula or breastmilk for the first 6 months of his/her life. After that, slowly introduce new baby foods to the child.

formula definitely. It is their brain food for the first year. However, you can give him/her baby food on the side, but keep the formula going strong for a year, then go to milk. Merry Christmas

The formula is still necassary but they need to get food because at 10 months you need to start weining off and only giving like 2 bottles

Formula is their main source for nutrition at this age. Baby food contains certain vitamins and minerals depending on what you buy, but they get most of their nutrition from their formula.
