The thing that symbolises christmas nowadays are rabid hordes of christians, running from a shopping mall to shopping mall, spending huge quantities of money and forgetting totally, that the holiday originates in pagan celebrations.

Christmas originates in pagan celebration of Winter Solstice, when the sun reachest the lowest point in the cirsle and the night is the longest - after this day, there's more and more sun, so the celebration is about
-(re)birth of sun.
Now go figure, christians, who couldn't uproot the pagan beliefs, gave the celebration their own meaning by saying it celebrated the
-birth of son (of god)

So therefore, the original symbol of the winter season is fire and sun.
