Will there ever be a new Star Trek series

Difficult question. A lot will hinge on the popularity of the next Trek film - Trek XI in 2008. It looks like it's going to be a prequel with Kirk and Spock (young actors, obviously - Matt Damon has expressed an interest in playing Kirk)- there will probably be an attempt to make it 'cooler' and 'hard edged' in the way that Batman, Battlestar Galactica and James Bond have been re-visualised. Whether this will mean more violence and action and less of what made Trek special (optimistic Roddenberryesque ideals) we shall see. It will no doubt be a reboot, though. I think Trek XI is Trek's last chance - if it fails Trek will not be on TV for a long time, if ever. I think TV movies or straight to video (DVD) could be an option (to cater for hardcore Trekkies like me). The highpoint of the NextGen days are long gone, though, whatever happens. Sadly we are unlikely to see any more series set in the time of TNG, DS9 and VOY, which is a shame for those of us who enjoyed those eras and were disappointed with Enterprise.

Anytime there is even the possibility for making money, people will find a way. The problem with the last set of Treks is that they flooded the market and ran out of ideas. Even the first year of Star Trek The Next Generation was a rehash of the original series stories. So they re-entered the game without fresh ideas (only some new technology).

The Original Series, for me, remains the best. If they do another series, I hope they plan it much better and continue to move toward the future.

Also alot of the later TV stuff that came out seemed bland and filled with typical stereotypes and typical soap opera-ish stories. My hope is that they get back to the basics.

In the meantime, I highly recommend Star Trek novels. Many of the stories are terrific creations. By taking this route, you can enjoy plots and stories that are often much, much better than anything you'll see on TV.

Live long and prosper;-)

My guess, 9 years on from your question being posted is that there will be a new Star Trek series. Star Trek: Renegades is fan production (starring many Trek actors) that is now going into series online. They anticipate creating 12 episodes - roughly one per month.

As to an "official" Star Trek series, I think CBS could make an announcement about a new series in late 2016, after the Star Trek Beyond movie is released.

The appetite for a new series is certainly there with the fans. CBS (who own the TV series rights) just need to capitalize on it.

There hasn't been a decent Star Trek movie since First Contact and Enterprise was just plain boring. I think the Star Trek brain trust needs some rest and fresh ideas before the try a new series. There is another movie in the works and I think the future of the franchise will be decided on the success or failure of that movie.

I'd like to see a series that takes place just after the Axanar incident and the solidification of the United Federation Of Planets. The series could be called: Star Trek: Federation.

Probably not. Rick Berman, the producer of "Star Trek: Nemesis" pretty much killed the franchise with that movie.

He's also not helping it with his wanting to make "Starfleet Academy". Or as I like to call it, "Star Trek 90210".

I don't know for sure but my guess would be no because Deep Space 9 and Voyager series weren't as popular as Next Generation or the original series with Spock.
